Susan Martinez wards off senioritis with Girls’ Golf

Susan keeps herself busy, playing in her third year of Girls’ Golf.

Just enjoy the game. Golf is definitely not easy, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it at first. It’ll come to you eventually, so until then, have fun!

— Susan Martinez, senior

Starting her third year on the Girls’ Golf team, senior Susan Martinez still enjoys the game as much as she did the first year she played. When asked what her favorite part of playing golf was, she said “I love being out on the course. It’s a perfect place to be when you are really stressed and need to relax, or if you just wanna go out and have a good time.” This being her third year, Susan is the longest returning player on the team.

Golf, though it seems very easy, is a very difficult game to master. Even after years of playing, it is still a very demanding game, taxing the player mentally. Concentration and repetition are very important when it comes to playing golf. Some of the professional players get distracted by some sound or movement causing them to mess up. Golf is not a game for someone with ADHD, because focus is the key. Another thing that is important is being patient and calm. Susan says, “I really struggle with having patience. Golf requires a lot of patience and that’s what I really lack.”

Though golf may sound very challenging, many people play as a way to wind down and relax. Once you get the hang of all the basics, it all becomes a simple routine, a way to let frustration out, and it comes with a pretty view as an added bonus. In response to a question about what she enjoys most about golf, Susan answered with, “I love being out on the course. It’s a perfect place to be when you’re really stressed and need to relax, or if you just wanna go out and have a good time.”

So if there are any girls out there who are considering learning how to play golf, let Susan Martinez be an inspiration to you and listen to her little bit of advice: “Just enjoy the game. Golf is definitely not easy, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it at first. It’ll come to you eventually, so until then, have fun!”
