There have been many civil rights organizations, including the Black Panthers. But there is one group that champions and supports the Latino or Chicano movement. The Brown Berets, formerly known as the Young Chicanos For Community Action, were founded in 1967. The goal of the Brown Berets is to use Education reform, stop police brutality, and even offer people free health care.
They gained momentum early on with the East LA walkouts and established free health care clinics in LA. One of the biggest moves they have accomplished was the Chicano Moratorium, where over 20,000 people protested the high casualty rates of Mexican-American soldiers.
However, in 1972, the Brown Berets national organization disbanded after internal friction and infighting with law enforcement. The brown berets remain active in several locations and continue to fight for the freedom and rights of all Chicanos.
